Distractions are everywhere, they’re a part of everyday life. It’s almost impossible for us to focus on one thing at a time, but the truth it, it’s not healthy! It’s so important for us to change our mindsets!

If there is something specific that keeps distracting you, practice a mind-shift meditation. This is the practice of replacing one thought with another, more beneficial thought. With enough practice, this will become an automatic response.

Let’s be honest

Most of us get our news from social media, and I’ve made my feelings about social media quite clear: it can be very damaging. There are many scary things happening in the world right now; war, homelessness, destructive weather, natural disasters, etc. and it is sobering.

Then there are the posts that affect our self-esteem and trigger our anxiety.

When we get too caught up in anything that doesn’t elevate or fulfill us, we need to shift our mindset and get our high vibes back!

Here’s how it works

When that one specific thought/image/feeling appears, you acknowledge it, accept it, then replace it with a more productive thought/image/feeling.

For example (and I’m getting quite personal here), there is a specific celebrity that I prefer not to stay informed of his current events; not because I loathe him, I just can’t process his energy. So, if I ever do see him in my newsfeed, since I can’t block his energy, it stays with me all day- not good. I sit in a quick meditation and use the steps I outlined above:

I acknowledge it: yes, I encountered his energy

I accept it: I encountered his energy and I choose to move past this feeling

I replace it: I am moving past this overwhelming energy and replacing it with the calming energy I get from imagining myself sitting peacefully next to a lake

Before you know it

Now, you don’t have to talk yourself through these steps, but you can if it helps. It may be a good beginning practice until you get the hang of it, then before you know it, you’re vibin’ high again! It’s worth a try next time you’re hit with something out of the blue that just doesn’t make you smile.

Take care of each other.
